Non-Realistic Literature: William Morris and the Art of Escapism (February 2017)

Defended on: 24 February 2017

Supervisor: Prof.dr. Rodica Dimitriu

Andreea Mihaela Stancu defended her PhD thesis Non-Realistic Literature: Willaim Morris and the Art of Escapism. Having grown a passion for Morris’s art, Ms Stancu responded to it with elegance and refinement. Each slide was framed by an exquisite pattern designed by the late Pre-Raphaelite writer and designer, who enhanced reality with his fantastic projections. Professor Dr. Rodica Dimitriu, the academic advisor, and the other three referees, Professor Dr. Mihai Stroe from the University of Bucharest, Professor Dr. Remus Bejan  from ”Ovidius” University of Constanţa, and Professor Dr. Rodica Albu from ”Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iasi highly appreciated the thesis for its remarkable insights, and the author for her commitment to Morris’s work. Since William Morris is less known in Romania, and since Ms Stancu is also the translator of his utopian novel News from Nowhere, the thesis is a valuable contribution to the study of this Victorian writer’s literature in Romania.
