Celebrating Diversity at the English Department’s Reading Room

Diversitate groupAn intercultural initiative of incoming Erasmus students from France, Italy, Germany, Latvia and Spain, together with Romanian English Majors and American Studies students, the “DIVERSITATE” group is an academic community focused on openness, dialogue and inclusion. The meetings, taking place every Friday from 6 PM at the Reading Room, focus on issues of the LGBTQI+ community in Romania and elsewhere and set out to break down the societal barriers of prejudice, misinformation and discrimination.

Attended by an unexpectedly large number of both Erasmus and Romanian students, the first meeting, on November 2, 2018, discussed the context and consequences of the Romanian referendum held on October 6 and 7, as well as other issues such as homophobia, stereotypes and discrimination.

The next meeting will take place on Friday, November 9 and it will focus on representations of LGBTQI+ people in the media and pop culture.
