Registration deadline:1 November 2021
Early bird deadline: 1 October 2021
Poster cs 2021The fifth C. S. Lewis conference focuses on C. S. Lewis and his literary and academic kin as creators of worlds. His entire work testifies to his fascination with alternative universes, from his scholarly exploration of Medieval literature, with its haunting myths and arcane symbolism, through his fiction, to his apologetics, where Christianity is seen as a parallel kingdom seeking to be reinstated in “an enemy-occupied territory”. From pain to love, through faith and imagination, he opened a spectrum of realities inviting exploration and reflection. The collection of essays by Lewis alluded to in the title of this year’s conference spans both this and other worlds: “this” realm, which we inhabit, is the necessary, unavoidable starting point for any explorers, conquerors, pilgrims, even refugees into the “others”.

A Century of Scholarly Pursuits: Anglicists and Americanists Today - Facing Ideology and its Discontents

Iasi, May 8-9, 2025

A Hybrid Conference

IMG 9735In the hallowed halls of the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi and also in a hybrid format, scholars from all over Romania, as well as abroad, gathered to mark a momentous occasion: the centennial celebration of the founding of the English Department (one of the many of the Faculty of Letters). The conference, aptly titled Facing Ideology and its Discontents, provided a fertile ground for intellectual discourse, drawing attention to the ever-evolving landscape of ideologies that shape our world through various mechanisms of our language(s).

The centenary celebration was opened by Dr. Dana Bădulescu (Head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures) and featured speeches by Dr. Nicoleta Laura Popa (Vice-Rector of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași), Dr. Oana Cogeanu-Haraga (Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Letters), and Dr. Codrin Liviu Cuțitaru (Member of the Scientific Committee).

The Conference opened each day with a plenary session featuring keynote speakers from Romania and abroad.
